The competition was organized in 1991 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The winner Mary Wu from Hong Kong played Mozart's Piano Concerto No.20 in D minor,K466,together with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Yip Wing-sie.
